Houseplants need far less light than the internet implies. These picks are sized to what they actually want, not to a tent.

The reasoning

Search for a houseplant grow light and you will mostly find fixtures designed for a grow tent. They are excellent products aimed at a different problem: a dense canopy of high-light crops in an enclosed space. Put one over a monstera in a living room and you have bought three times the light the plant can use, a fan you can hear, and a corner that looks like a facility.

Iowa State University Extension puts low-light foliage houseplants at 3 to 6 mol per square meter per day, foliage and flowering houseplants at 6 to 10, and flowering houseplants, succulents and leafy herbs at 12 to 16. Those are the numbers this list is sized against.

What most houseplants actually want
3–10 mol/m²/day

Iowa State University Extension. A seed tray wants about 12; a fruiting tomato wants 20 to 30. Houseplants sit at the bottom of the range, which is why a modest fixture usually wins.

How we picked

We have not tested any of these. Every figure below is either quoted from the manufacturer’s published specification with a link, or divided out by us with the working shown. Three criteria decided the order:

  • Right-sized rather than maximal. A fixture that delivers 700 µmol/m²/s to a pothos is not a better fixture, it is a more expensive one that costs more to run.
  • It has to be tolerable in a room you live in. This is the criterion grow-tent reviews ignore entirely, and it is decisive for houseplants. Magenta light, audible fans and industrial housings are real costs.
  • A published photon figure, where one exists. Of these five, three publish photon output; two publish none at all. We say which on every page they appear.

Working out what your plant needs

PPFD needed = DLI target × 1,000,000 ÷ (hours × 3600)
PPF needed = PPFD × your area (m²) ÷ uniformity

Target 8 mol/m²/day, running 12 hours a day.

PPFD = 8 × 1,000,000 ÷ (12 × 3600) = 185 µmol/m²/s.

A 2 × 2 ft area is 0.372 m². 185 × 0.372 = 69 µmol/s landing on the plant; at 0.8 uniformity the fixture needs to produce about 86 µmol/s.

The SANSI BR30 publishes 65.6 µmol/s — just short over that full area, and comfortably sufficient if the plant occupies the middle foot of it rather than the whole table. That is the kind of distinction a wattage figure cannot make.

Efficiency, and where it stops mattering

For houseplants the light runs for months rather than weeks, so efficacy matters more here than it does for seed starting. The spread across these picks is wide:

Cost figures are computed at the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh (EIA, June 2026) — put your own tariff into the cost calculator. Note that the efficient fixture costs the most to run here, because it draws three times the power: efficacy tells you photons per watt, not dollars per month.

The honest verdict on the expensive one

Soltech’s Aspect Gen 2 publishes 50 µmol/s from 36 W, which computes to 1.39 µmol/J — the least efficient fixture we have specs for anywhere on this site. It is also the only one you would willingly hang above a sofa, and it publishes PPFD at three separate distances so you can actually place it, which almost nobody else does.

Both things are true. If the fixture has to live in a room you look at, the design premium is a real thing you are buying and the efficiency penalty works out to a couple of dollars a month. Just buy it knowing which one you are paying for.

What we could not tell you

Neither Barrina nor GooingTop publishes any photon data — no PPF, no PPFD, no efficacy. Both are on this list because the form factors are genuinely useful and the prices are low, but nothing about their output can be checked before you buy. If that matters to you, the SANSI bulb is the cheapest fixture here whose output is published.

Skip it if you are lighting more than one plant. 65.6 umol/s is a small amount of light spread over a cone — it lights a single specimen, not a shelf.

Who should skip it

Skip it if photons per watt is the metric that matters. At 50 umol/s from 36 W it is the least efficient fixture on this page, and much of the price is industrial design.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want to place it by the numbers. AC Infinity prints 1098 PPFD with no measurement distance attached, which makes that figure impossible to use or compare.

Questions people actually ask

+How much light do indoor plants need?
Iowa State University Extension gives 3 to 6 mol per square meter per day for low-light foliage plants, 6 to 10 for foliage and flowering houseplants, and 12 to 16 for flowering houseplants, succulents and leafy herbs. That is far less than the grow-tent guides most searches return.
+Do I need a special grow light for houseplants?
Not necessarily. A bright white LED at a sensible distance genuinely helps a low-light plant. What a purpose-built horticultural fixture gives you is a published photon output, so you can calculate whether it will hit your target rather than finding out over six weeks.
+How many hours should a houseplant grow light be on?
University of Minnesota Extension recommends 12 to 14 hours for foliage houseplants and 14 to 16 for flowering ones. Iowa State University Extension suggests 12 to 14 generally, with 10 as a minimum and 16 as a maximum for home growers. Put it on a timer.
+Is an expensive designer grow light worth it?
For photons per watt, no. The Soltech Aspect Gen 2 computes to 1.39 µmol/J against 2.7 for an efficient board — roughly half. What you are buying is a fixture you can put in a living room without it looking like equipment, which is a real thing to want. The efficiency penalty costs a couple of dollars a month.
