What “Full Spectrum” Actually Means

Nothing, on its own. There is no threshold a light must clear to print the phrase. Here are the figures that carry the information the label only pretends to.

The reasoning

There is no legal definition of “full spectrum” in lighting, no minimum band a fixture must cover to use it, and no body that certifies it. A manufacturer can print the phrase on a 6500 K white LED, on a purple blue-and-red array, and on a warm 3000 K pendant, and be equally within its rights each time. Those three fixtures do not produce similar light.

This is not an accusation of dishonesty. It is a statement about information content: a phrase that every product in a category can truthfully use tells you nothing about any of them. If you are deciding between two lights, the label cancels out on both sides of the comparison.

What the phrase guarantees about photon output
Nothing

It is not a standard, a threshold or a certification. Two fixtures can both be 'full spectrum' and differ by a factor of six in the photons they deliver.

What the phrase is gesturing at

Behind the marketing there is a real idea. Early LED grow lights were narrow-band: mostly deep red around 660 nm plus some blue around 450 nm, because those bands sit near the absorption peaks of chlorophyll and were the cheapest photons to manufacture. They worked, and they looked awful — the magenta glow people still associate with grow lights.

“Full spectrum” was coined to distinguish the later white LEDs, which use a blue emitter under a phosphor coating to produce broad output across the visible range. So the phrase carries one weak signal: the light is probably white rather than purple. That is genuinely worth something, for reasons below. It is just not worth what the packaging implies.

The numbers that replace it

Everything the label gestures at can be replaced with figures that are measurable, comparable and — when a manufacturer bothers to publish them — checkable.

Those are unpacked properly in PAR, PPFD and DLI explained. The short version: PPF sizes a fixture, PPFD tells you what lands on the leaf, and DLI is PPFD accumulated over a day, which is the figure extension services publish targets against.

The tell: a PPFD figure with no distance

The most common way a spec sheet manages to look informative while telling you nothing is a bare PPFD number. AC Infinity publishes “1098 PPFD” for the IONBOARD S22 with no measurement distance attached. Photon density falls off sharply with distance, so 1098 at 4 inches and 1098 at 24 inches describe wildly different fixtures — and there is no way to tell which one you are being told about.

Compare that with Soltech, which publishes PPFD at three distances for the Aspect Gen 2: about 50 µmol/m²/s at 1 m, 34.9 at 4 ft, 15.5 at 6 ft. Those numbers are much lower and far more useful, because you can place the fixture with them.

Why a distance-free PPFD figure cannot be salvaged

Photon density from a compact source falls roughly with the square of distance. Double the distance and the density drops by about a factor of four.

So a fixture measured at 6 inches and one measured at 12 inches could publish the same headline PPFD while the second is delivering roughly four times as much total light.

Without the distance, the number cannot be converted, compared or used for placement. It is decoration.

Why white light is still worth choosing

Not because the plant prefers it — the peer-reviewed comparison of white against blue-plus-red radiation found white performs comparably — but because you can see under it. Chlorosis, spider mite stippling, the specific yellow of overwatering: these are color judgments, and they are impossible under magenta light. A white fixture is the one you will actually notice problems under.

It also matters if the light lives in a room you use. Every fixture on this site we would put in a living room is white; the purple-array look is a tent product.

What to do with this at the point of purchase

  1. Ignore the phrase on the box. Every competitor prints it too.
  2. Look for PPF in µmol/s. If it is there you can size the fixture — put it into the coverage calculator with your area and find out what it will actually deliver.
  3. Look for efficacy in µmol/J. If it is there you can price the light over a season.
  4. If neither is published, you are buying on form factor and price. That is a legitimate decision — it is how we ended up recommending Barrina strips — but make it knowingly.

  • Does the published efficacy check out against the published PPF?: Yes — 2.49 umol/J computed against 2.5 umol/J published
    249.21 umol/s / 100 W = 2.4921 umol/J. The published 2.5 umol/J is that number rounded. Not every brand's two figures agree like this, which is exactly why we divide them.
  • Average PPFD across its 2 x 2 ft core footprint: about 536 umol/m2/s
    2 ft x 2 ft = 4 sq ft = 0.372 m2. 249.21 / 0.372 = 670 umol/m2/s at perfect uniformity; at a 0.8 uniformity factor, about 536 umol/m2/s.

Who should skip it

Skip it if raw output is what you are buying — the TS 1000 delivers 38% more photons per second, at the cost of 50 W more draw.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you are lighting more than one plant. 65.6 umol/s is a small amount of light spread over a cone — it lights a single specimen, not a shelf.

Who should skip it

Skip it if photons per watt is the metric that matters. At 50 umol/s from 36 W it is the least efficient fixture on this page, and much of the price is industrial design.

Questions people actually ask

+Is full spectrum a real standard?
No. There is no regulatory definition, no minimum spectral coverage and no certifying body for the phrase in consumer horticultural lighting. Any fixture can carry it.
+So is a full spectrum light a waste of money?
Not at all. White LED fixtures are genuinely good and most of the best-performing lights on the market are white. The point is narrower: the phrase itself cannot be used to choose between two products, because both will have it.
+What should I look for instead?
PPF in micromoles per second, so you can compute coverage; efficacy in micromoles per joule, so you can compute running cost; and a PPFD figure that states the distance it was measured at. A brand publishing all three has told you what you need to know.
+Do plants need green light, which purple fixtures skip?
Green light is used by plants and penetrates deeper into a canopy than red or blue, because less of it is absorbed at the leaf surface. Whether that matters at houseplant scale is not something we can settle from published consumer-fixture data, so we will not claim it does. The stronger practical argument for white light is that you can see your plants under it.
