Grow Lights for Monstera

A monstera is a medium-light plant, not a high-light one — and the split leaves everyone wants are mostly a maturity question with a light component.

The reasoning

Monstera deliciosa is a medium-light plant. Iowa State University Extension’s 6-to-10 mol/m²/day band for foliage and flowering houseplants is the right target, and it is worth stating clearly because monstera advice online drifts in both directions — people either treat it as a low-light plant that will thrive in a dark corner, or throw a 150 W panel at it.

What that means for a fixture

Sizing a light for one monstera

Target 8 mol/m²/day at 12 hours a day. PPFD needed = 8 × 1,000,000 ÷ (12 × 3600) = 185 µmol/m²/s.

A mature monstera has a canopy roughly 3 × 3 ft — 9 sq ft, or 0.836 m². 185 × 0.836 = 155 µmol/s landing on the leaves; at 0.8 uniformity the fixture needs to produce about 193 µmol/s.

That is beyond a single grow bulb (SANSI publishes 65.6 µmol/s) and comfortably inside a 100 W-class board (the IONBOARD S22 implies about 311 µmol/s from its published 115 W at 2.7 µmol/J).

For a smaller monstera with a canopy about 1.5 × 1.5 ft (0.209 m²), the requirement drops to 185 × 0.209 ÷ 0.8 = 48 µmol/s — well inside a single bulb. Plant size drives this far more than plant species does.

Distance and placement

University of Minnesota Extension recommends 12 to 24 inches from the light for foliage houseplants. For a monstera that generally means mounting above and slightly to one side, because the plant is wider than it is deep and the productive leaves are on the outside of the canopy.

Rotate the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks. Monstera lean toward light noticeably, and an unrotated plant develops a flat back and a lopsided crown that is very hard to correct later.

About fenestration

The split, holed leaves are the reason most people buy the plant, and the honest answer about light’s role is more nuanced than most sources allow. Fenestration is primarily a maturity trait — juvenile monstera leaves are entire, and the plant produces fenestrated leaves as it matures and climbs. Light is a contributing factor because a plant with insufficient light stays juvenile longer and produces smaller leaves, but light is not a switch that turns fenestration on.

What genuinely helps, in rough order of effect: giving it something to climb (a moss pole or plank — monstera are climbers and mature faster with support), adequate light in the 6-to-10 band, adequate pot size, and time. Anyone promising fenestration from a light purchase alone is overselling.

Who should skip it

Skip it if photons per watt is the metric that matters. At 50 umol/s from 36 W it is the least efficient fixture on this page, and much of the price is industrial design.

Skip it if you want to place it by the numbers. AC Infinity prints 1098 PPFD with no measurement distance attached, which makes that figure impossible to use or compare.

+How much light does a monstera need?
About 6 to 10 mol per square meter per day, which is Iowa State University Extension's band for foliage and flowering houseplants. At a 12-hour photoperiod that works out to roughly 185 µmol/m²/s at the leaves.
+Will a grow light make my monstera fenestrate?
Not on its own. Fenestration is primarily a maturity trait — juvenile leaves are entire and splits appear as the plant matures and climbs. Adequate light helps because an under-lit plant stays juvenile longer, but giving it a moss pole to climb usually does more.
+How far should a grow light be from a monstera?
Twelve to 24 inches, per University of Minnesota Extension's guidance for foliage houseplants. Mount it above and slightly to one side of a wide plant, and rotate the pot every couple of weeks so the crown does not go lopsided.
+Can a monstera live in a dark corner?
