The Best Dimmable Grow Lights

Dimming only earns its keep if you are above your target — which most home shelves are. Here is which fixtures let you come down accurately, and which just have a knob.

The reasoning

Dimming gets sold as a nice-to-have and is usually filed alongside features nobody uses. On a home grow shelf it is the opposite: it is one of the few controls that solves a problem most people actually have, because most home setups deliver more light than the plants under them can use.

Run the coverage arithmetic on a typical pairing and you see it immediately. A Mars Hydro TS 1000 over its own stated 2.5 × 2.5 ft footprint works out to about 472 µmol/m²/s — above the top of University of Minnesota Extension’s high band, which ends at 450. Over a monstera or a shelf of foliage plants wanting 100 to 150, it is delivering three to four times the target and you are paying 150 W to do it.

Only AC Infinity publishes actual steps. Four more dim via an unmarked knob or unspecified levels; three do not dim at all.

How we ranked these

Three criteria, in this order. None of them is “does it have a dimmer” — six of the nine fixtures we cover do.

  1. Is the dimming repeatable? A setting you can return to exactly is a control. A knob position you eyeball is a guess you make again every time you touch it. This is the criterion that separates the field, and almost nobody publishes it.
  2. Is there headroom worth dimming into? Dimming a fixture that was already marginal for your area achieves nothing. The fixtures worth having a dimmer on are the ones that overshoot.
  3. Does the dimming scale with the setup? On a multi-shelf build, a per-fixture knob means walking the rack. A daisy chain means one adjustment.

1. AC Infinity IONBOARD S22 — the only one with real steps

AC Infinity publishes 0 to 100% in 20% increments. That phrasing is doing more work than it looks like. It means five defined positions you can set, leave, and come back to — so “I run this at 60% for winter” is a reproducible instruction rather than a vague memory of where the dial was.

It pairs with the highest published efficacy we cover, 2.7 µmol/J, on named Samsung LM301H diodes, and it is a passively cooled board 1.1 cm thick with no fan to fail.

The honest con: AC Infinity publishes “1098 PPFD” with no measurement distance attached, which makes that particular figure impossible to use or compare. It also publishes no PPF, so its photon output has to be derived — 115 W × 2.7 = about 311 µmol/s, our arithmetic rather than their measurement. Full write-up in the IONBOARD S22 review.

2. Mars Hydro TS 1000 — the most to dim into

The highest published output here at 343 µmol/s, and the fixture most likely to be genuinely overpowered for a home shelf. That is exactly what makes its dimmer valuable: you can buy the output for the shelf you might build later and run it at half now.

Dimming a TS 1000 down to a houseplant target

Over a 2 × 4 ft shelf (0.743 m²) at full output: 343 ÷ 0.743 × 0.8 = 369 µmol/m²/s — the high band, right for herbs or greens.

For a foliage shelf wanting 150 µmol/m²/s you need roughly 41% of that. Dimmed to about 40%, draw falls from 150 W to approximately 60 W.

Over a five-month season at 12 h/day that is the difference between $60.08 and about $24.03 — roughly $36 saved, on the same fixture, for turning a knob.

The honest con: that knob is unmarked. You can dim it, but you cannot record where you set it, and 40% by eye is not a measurement. Mars Hydro also publishes no PPFD at any distance.

3. VIVOSUN VS1000 — four levels and a chain

Four discrete dimming levels, which is repeatable in the way a knob is not, plus a daisy chain so a multi-fixture build adjusts together. It publishes the highest efficacy figure of anything we cover at 2.75 µmol/J, on Samsung LM301 diodes.

The honest con: VIVOSUN publishes no PPF, so that 2.75 figure has no second number to check it against — multiplying it by the 100 W rating just returns the claim it came from. Four levels is also coarse; if your target sits between two of them, you are choosing between over and under.

4. Soltech Aspect Gen 2 — dimming for a room, not a shelf

An in-line dimmer with a published 10 to 100% range, on the only fixture here you would willingly hang in a living room. The dimming matters differently on this one: it is about the light being tolerable in the evening rather than about hitting a plant target.

It is also the only fixture we cover publishing PPFD at three separate distances — about 50 µmol/m²/s at 1 m, 34.9 at 4 ft, 15.5 at 6 ft — and those figures agree with the inverse-square relationship to within rounding.

The honest con: at 50 µmol/s from 36 W it works out to 1.39 µmol/J, the least efficient fixture on this site by a clear margin. Dimming a fixture that is already modest means very little light indeed at the low end.

5. ViparSpectra P1000 — dimming at rack scale

Dimmable, no fan, and a published daisy chain of up to 20 fixtures. For a multi-shelf build that is a real convenience: one adjustment rather than twenty. Its coverage claim also states the distance it applies at — 2.5 × 2.5 ft vegetative at 16 inches — which is better disclosure than most of this category manages.

The honest con: it publishes no PPF, no PPFD and no efficacy. You can dim it, but you cannot compute what you are dimming from or to, which undercuts the entire purpose of the control. This is the pick to take only if the daisy chain solves a specific problem you have.

The one that cannot dim, and why that is fine

Barrina strips have an on/off switch per fixture and no dimming at all. On a shelf that is a smaller loss than it sounds: you control the level by how many strips you run, which is a coarse dimmer that also saves the electricity of the strips you leave off. Two strips instead of three is a 33% reduction in both light and draw.

When dimming is not the answer

Two cases worth naming, because a dimmer is often reached for when something else is wrong:

  • You are under target, not over. Dimming makes it worse. Check first with the coverage calculator — the whole premise of this page is that you are above your target, and that is worth confirming rather than assuming.
  • You want a wider footprint. Raising a fixture reduces intensity and widens coverage; dimming reduces intensity while keeping the footprint. If your problem is that the edges are dark, height is the control you want, not the dimmer.

The verdict

Buy the AC Infinity board if you want dimming you can actually record and repeat, and the Mars Hydro if you want a fixture with enough output that dimming saves you real money. Treat a dimmer on a fixture that publishes no photon data — the ViparSpectra — as a convenience rather than a control, because you cannot know what you are setting.

And if you are choosing between two otherwise equal fixtures, the one with stated increments is worth more than the one with a knob. It is a small distinction that turns a fiddly adjustment into a setting.

Skip it if you are lighting a bookshelf. 343 umol/s concentrated into a 2.5 ft square is far more light than a monstera wants, and you pay 150 W to deliver it.

Skip it if photons per watt is the metric that matters. At 50 umol/s from 36 W it is the least efficient fixture on this page, and much of the price is industrial design.

Questions people actually ask

+Do I need a dimmable grow light?
If your fixture delivers more than your plants' target — which most home pairings do — then yes, it is the control that saves you money. A Mars Hydro TS 1000 over its own stated footprint computes to about 472 µmol/m²/s, above the top of the published high band and three to four times what a foliage shelf wants.
+Which grow light has the best dimming?
The AC Infinity IONBOARD S22, because it is the only one we cover that publishes actual increments — 0 to 100% in 20% steps. Five defined positions can be set and returned to; an unmarked knob, which is what most of the field offers, cannot.
+How much does dimming save on electricity?
Roughly in proportion to the dimming. Taking a 150 W fixture down to about 40% for a foliage shelf drops it to around 60 W, which over a five-month season at 12 hours a day is the difference between about $60 and about $24 at the US residential average rate.
+Should I dim the light or raise it higher?
Depends which problem you have. Dimming cuts intensity while keeping the footprint you sized for. Raising cuts intensity and widens the footprint at the same time. If your edges are dark, raise it; if the level is simply too high across the whole area, dim it.
